Spotlight - Catya Horton

Catya is celebrating her ten year anniversary of working at CASCO Pet. Originally from Sicily, she moved to the UK 14 years ago and started working at McDonalds in the kitchen flipping burgers, as her English was not good enough to be in front of the public. Catya has come a long way with the company since joining the accounts department at CASCO in 2007, so we asked her to share a bit about her journey and achievements.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am married and I live with my husband in Horsham. I enjoy reading psychological thrillers, walking, cooking, shopping, and gym classes such as Pilates.

How do you start your day?

I'm a bit of a workaholic so first thing in the morning I have a quick scan of my emails and then coffee. I live very close to work so depending on traffic it takes around 20 mins to get to the office.

How has your job role changed over your ten years at CASCO Pet?

My background is finance (I've got an Italian bookkeeping diploma). I started at CASCO as an Accounts Administrator working closely with the Accounts Manager, and helping in other areas of the business such as helpdesk and purchasing. A few years passed and because of my involvement in many departments I was promoted to Office Manager. With the business expanding rapidly it became apparent that the General Manager at the time required a "right hand woman", that knows the business and the team well enough to help them with various projects, and manage their day to day work life. It was then that I was offered the job of Executive Assistant. Whilst working in this role I also dedicated some of my time to HR, as it is something that really interests me. I am now a Corporate Manager, and work very closely with the Senior Leadership Team and help them to strategically move the business forward. I'm also currently managing a big IT project that is being implemented across every CASCO branch.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am a very organised person and always have a to do list, however due to my experience in the company I get involved in so many things that the list I've prepared in the morning will change by lunch time. I love the variety of my role! I usually start by reading and replying to emails and prioritise any urgent tasks and deadlines. If we have a new starter I will be spending their first day with them, and ensure that they are settling in well. As I am working on a new IT project my day is full of Excel spreadsheets and learning new software.

What is your greatest achievement since starting at CASCO Pet ten years ago?

My most proud moment and biggest achievement is my ten year anniversary working for CASCO. When I started, I was a young Sicilian girl worried about what the future would hold, adjusting to a different language and culture. But here I am, working with a fantastic company as a part of the Management team, and responsible for big projects and so on.

What do you enjoy most about working at CASCO Pet?

As with any other job there are highs and lows but I love the fact that I get involved in various departments, and actively participate at Senior Management meetings. If you work hard and do a good job at CASCO you are recognised!

What is your after work routine?

I try and leave work at a reasonable time and if it's nice weather I like to go for a bike ride or a long walk or run. Then I'm back home to cook some proper Italian pasta! If I still have time left in my day I might indulge myself in some trash TV like the Kardashians.
